10 locations in Rhodes that you must visit

1. Palace of the Grand Master of the KnightsThis magnificent palace is located at the end of the Knights' Street in the city of Rhodes. It was built during the 14th century and it served as the residence of the Great Master and the main administrative seat of the Order of the Knights of St. John. After the Ottoman occupation of Rhodes, it lost its significance and was used as a prison, and several times it suffered during the earthquake and explosions. It was rebuilt in the 20th century during Italian rule and became the summer residence of King Victor Emanuel III, and later Benito Mussolini. Today it has the function of a museum/exhibition center. In the period from April 10 to October 31, it is open from 8 am to 8 pm and the price of the ticket is 8 €.2. Medieval city wallsThe walls surrounding the old city of Rhodes are about four kilometers long, and some parts of the walls are thicker than 10 meters. They were built in the Byzantine period, but later they were expanded by the Knights of St. John to better protect themselves from enemy attacks. There are magnificent towers, gates, and bastions here, and in the interior, there are numerous sights of the old town.3. Anthony Quinn Bay and beachAnthony Quinn Bay is located on the east coast of Rhodes, about 4 km south of Faliraki. This is one of the most beautiful and most popular beaches in Rhodes, more suitable for the younger population because it is not ideal for families with small children or the elderly because of the sharp walls in the water and on the beach. Because of the green vegetation surrounding the beach, the sea is beautiful emerald colors, and due to the richness of the underwater world and crystal clear water, Anthony Quinn beach is ideal for diving.4. Tsambika monasteryThis monastery is located about 25 km south of the city of Rhodes and was built on the top of a hill with a beautiful view of the surrounding area and the surrounding beaches. The legend says that women who are facing difficulties to stay in a second state come here to pray for fertility, and if they get a child afterward, they should be called Tsambikos or Tsambika. And indeed, on the island of Rhodes, there are plenty of inhabitants who bear these names.5. Acropolis in LindosThe ancient city of Lindos is located 45 km south of the city of Rhodes and was founded in the 10th century BC. Due to its position between Greece and the Middle East, it was the main trading center, but its significance began to decline when the city of Rhodes was founded. Within and around the Acropolis, numerous archaeological sites have been found, such as the Doric temple dedicated to Athena Lindia, Propiles (monumental steps of the sanctuary), and a Roman temple dedicated to Emperor Diocletian. All this is protected by a medieval fortress built in the 14th century by the Knights of Sv. John, and outside the fortress there was a theater. The entrance fee for this site is 12 €.6. Monolithos FortressIt is located near the village of Monolithos, on the top of a 100 m high wall, and access is possible through narrow stairs carved into the rock. It was built in the 15th century by the Knights of St. John, in order to protect the island from the attack. Although this once was a strong fortress that nobody managed to conquer, today there was nothing left but the outer walls and the small chapel of St. Panteleimonas. The entrance is free, and there is also a café where you can take a refreshment after climbing to the fort.7. Port MandrakiThis is the main port of Rhodes and the place where once stood the statue of Kolos from Rhodes. Today, at the entrance to the port, there are two stone pillars decorated with bronze reindeer, bearing the names Elefos and Elafina. The ambiance is completed by the 15th century St Nicholas castle, which functions as a lighthouse and three old windmills. There are numerous luxury yachts in the Mandraki port, as well as excursion boats that go to the neighboring islands.8. Thermal springs KalitheaThey are located 9 km from the city of Rhodes and are known to cure various diseases, such as arthritis, diabetes, tropical diseases, allergies, asthma. Here, in 1928, the first buildings were built above thermal springs and a spa was opened, and a few months later a whole project was completed that included a stone mosaic, a Rotonda hall, a terrace, stairs, and gardens. At the end of the 20th century, the spa was abandoned, but in 2007, the sources of Kalitea were rebuilt and since then they have been re-established. The complex is open from 8h to 20h and the entrance costs 3 €.9. The butterfly valleyOn the west side of the island, about 25 km from the city of Rhodes, this unique natural reserve is located. The favorable microclimate with the Pelekanos River and the lush flora creates an ideal environment for large populations of caterpillars that turn into Panaxia butterflies in early June and move to areas of high humidity to reproduce. Throughout the year, visitors come here to enjoy nature and to enjoy the vast number of butterflies that cover the entire area. Of course, only the observers are permitted and it is forbidden to disturb them by making noise, sudden movements or in any other way.10. Suleyman's mosqueSuleiman's mosque is at the end of Socrates Street in the city of Rhodes, and its walls are characteristically pink-white. This was the first mosque in the city and the largest on the island, built shortly after it was captured in 1522 by the Turks, and reconstructed in 1808, mostly using parts of buildings that existed in the same place in the previous period. Today the Suleiman mosque has the function of a museum.

Tsigrado in Milos - beach only for brave people (VIDEO)

Many people go there with the desire to visit this beach, but when they see how hard is to get down, many of them give up.At the top of the cliff and at a height of about 50 meters, the descent starts through a slope that is very narrow and slippery from sand and gravel. After that, you will see wooden ladders with which you have to descend to the part where the rope awaits you. Use the rope to reach other, fairly steep ladders that finally lead you to the coast.Nevertheless, it is certainly worth going on this adventure, because Tsigrado is a beautiful, small and isolated sandy cove with clean and warm transparent water. Also, there are several beautiful caves around Tsigrado, ready for exploration.

Christmas in Greece - northern tradition in the sunny south

14 days of Christmas festivities in GreeceAlthough they belong to the Orthodox side of Christianity, Greeks celebrate Christmas on December 25th. In fact, as people who are known for nurturing family values, but also being on the fun-loving hedonistic side, Greeks officially celebrate Christmas for 14 days, starting on Christmas Eve and ending on Epiphany (6 January) with the "Great Blessing of Water".If you are coming from a typical continental or northern climate, you will absolutely love the weather during Christmas in Greece! This country has 320 sunny days per year and rarely has a significant amount of snow during winter, but they like to start with the festivities as soon as December arrives. The streets and city squares are decorated with lights, Christmas trees, and shiny boats. They may lack the snow, but they certainly don't lack the joy and enthusiasm! Greek homes as well are decorated quite early. This is not the time to count calories. Greek Christmas food is absolutely scrumptious! And don't forget to leave room for Greek desserts!Christmas in Greece is also the ideal time to try all their spicy and greasy staple food. Get it, greasy? After all, who's gonna see your belly this time of year Right? The main Christmas meal is often roasted lamb or pork, often served with spinach and cheese pie and various salads. The night before Christmas they bake a special kind of bread called Christopsomo (Christ's bread) and it is eaten after Christmas dinner. Every Christopsomo should have a cross made of dough in the center and almonds and nuts on top to symbolize prosperity.Did I mention that Greeks are quite the gourmets and hedonists? Their desserts will literally make your mouth water. Christmas and new year desserts include Baklava (filo pastry filled with chopped nuts and sweetened with syrup), Kataifi (made of shredded filo dough flavored with nuts and cinnamon), Deeples (a kind of fried pastry) and Melomakarona, which is basically an oval-shaped biscuit made from flour, olive oil and honey, rolled in chopped walnuts.Greeks have a boat decorating tradition for Christmas! It looks so festive and celebratory, even a Viking Santa would envy that sight.Another unique and fascinating tradition that connects sunny Greece with the northern custom of decorating a Christmas tree is boat decorating. As a nation of sailors, they have to honor their seafaring ancestors and what better way to do it? Decorated boats and ships are the shiniest tourist attractions in Greece every December. One of the biggest ones can be seen in Aristotelous Square in Thessaloniki (the second largest city in Greece) that is set up next to a huge Christmas Tree. There are also large boat displays in Athens and even in small coastal cities. The tallest and most beautiful Christmas tree is set up on Syntagma square in Athens and the whole ceremony of decorating the tree is usually followed by musical performances, singing and dancing. And yes, you've guessed it! There is a Greek Santa! His name is Saint Basils!Aghios Vasilis or Saint Basil, the patron saint of sailors, is also honored with the tradition of boat decorating during the holiday period and you can also find small model boats next to Christmas trees in Greek homes. Another way the Greeks honor this saint is by baking Vasilopita. It is a New Year's Day cake that has a hidden coin or trinket in it. It is believed that the member of the family who finds it will have good luck during the whole year. The Greeks share this custom with other areas in eastern Europe and the Balkans. Unlike in the Western countries, in Greece children get their Christmas present on January 1st, which is Saint Basil's day and younger children believe the gifts were brought by Aghios Vasilis (Saint Basil), so it is obviously their version of Santa Claus.Christmas carols - the Greek way!If you want to get a taste of genuine Greek culture you will not miss out on hearing Greek Zorba sirtaki music in one of the traditional Greek restaurants, even on Christmas.  However, singing carols is also very popular, especially on the three official carol days, Christmas Eve, New Year's Eve and January 5th. Most of the songs tell Christian stories about the events that took place around the birth of Christ, similar to the western traditional Christmas carols.Children will first "perform" for their parents and get some pocket money. After that they will walk around the neighborhood, singing, playing a triangle and drums and people who open the door for them will give them some treats, nuts, dried fruits, or a symbolic amount of money. The Greeks also share this custom with many other Orthodox cultures.Christmas customs of pagan originsChristmas in Greece has more unusual customs and beliefs dating back to ancient pagan origins. According to folklore, ugly goblins come out of the middle of the earth and enter their houses to eat food and frighten people during this time of year. Many homes keep a fire going for 12 days since the fire is believed to keep the goblins out.In some parts of the country, people hang a pomegranate in the doorway. This plant is a symbol of fertility, beauty and eternal life and the Greeks share this belief with ancient Persians. Nowadays it is also a symbol of success and prosperity. Some people throw the pomegranate fruit in front of their door and the more seeds come out of the fruit, the year ahead is believed to be more prosperous. Another custom that is supposed to bring good luck is smashing the dried fruit, stamping on it and then entering the house. Before Christmas trees became so popular, many Greeks used to wrap basil around a wooden cross. They would dip the cross into the water and sprinkle it around to ward off the evil spirits. The blessing of waterChristmas festivities in Greece end on Epiphany (January 6), which celebrates the baptism of Jesus Christ in the Jordan River. After the Divine Liturgy, priests would traditionally throw a cross into the sea or river and a group of swimmers would compete in swimming to recover it.It is usually a group of young men and athletes who participate in this event and the one who recovers the cross is considered to be especially lucky and prosperous during the following year. This custom is not unique in Greece, they also share it with their Orthodox counterparts from Slavic countries.
